To confess has to avow as synonym.
And the etymology of to avow is interesting:
From the Latin advoco which took the meaning of “to have recourse to someone as a lawyer, as a defender”.

interesting! i was just about to head to the interlinear bible online. i love that we have access to hebrew and latin. my grade ten latin classes were half a century ago but I loved it. the translations give us a deeper understanding. God certainly knows what is in our hearts.
